Mechanisms
Elementary Steps, Rate Determining Step, Catalyst
Many reactions in chemistry do not occur in one step. Usually they occur in several steps. The manner in which they occur is called a reaction mechanism. Each mechanism step is referred to as an elementary step. Mechanisms cannot be determine experimentally because it is difficult to isolate intermediate products. The rate at which the reaction occurs depends on one step in a reaction, the rate-determining step.
