What exactly is energy? What is heat? These are words that we are familiar with and use on a regular basis. What is the physical meaning of these terms? Each has to do with an aspect of chemistry called thermodynamics, or the movement of heat. Whenever a reaction occurs, there is some sort of energy transfer that accompanies the reaction. The energy transfer can either be an addition of energy to a system or the loss of energy by a system. Energy can come in different forms, either as work or heat. Each are different versions of the essence we refer to as energy.

Although the word "enthalpy" sounds a lot like "energy", there are slight differences between the two values. Enthalpy is the energy of a system with no change in volume, which means no work can be done by gas expansion. A thermochemical reaction depicts the amount of energy that is given off or taken in when a reaction occurs.
